Sermon Outlines

TEXT: Isaiah 40:1-5

Crooked – aqob (awl-kobe’) = fraudulent, deceitful, or polluted. Warped, perverse, forward, or untoward.

Jesus often referred to the people as a, “…a faithless and perverse generation…”

On the day of Pentecost after the Holy Ghost was given, Peter preached a powerful sermon. As he finished his message he said, “Save yourselves from this untoward generation.” (Acts 2:40)

The result – 3,000 people were saved.

Paul called it a “crooked and perverse generation” Philippians 2:14-16

If the day Isaiah spoke in was crooked and perverted; if when Jesus walked the earth, people were perverted; if when the Holy Ghost was given people were perverted; and during Paul’s ministry people were perverted; how much more are they perverted now?

Mankind is perverted! Good people are perverted! Even Christians are perverted! Perverted by sin!!!

Perverse = turned away from what is right or good

Isaiah 53:6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned every one to is own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

We have all been perverse. We have all turned away from what is right and good. This is because we’re infected by sin.

This is the very definition of iniquity. To be twisted or turned out of the right way.

Iniquity – the word picture is of a sapling that has grown twisted and bent because of an “ill wind” that has blown against it.

Another definition of perverse is: incorrect; corrupt; obstinate in opposing what is right; arising from, or indicative of stubbornness

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry…” (I Samuel 15:23)

Another definition of perverse is: wrongheaded

Because sin has infected our minds, we now think wrong!

This wrong thinking can become a stronghold in your life. When you continually think a certain way, neural pathways (grooves) are formed in your brain.

You tend to think a certain way. The way you think reinforces itself each time you think that way.

Example = The sky is blue!

When wrong thinking is handed down (learned/taught) from generation to generation, it becomes a generational curse.

This invites demonic possession.

The downward progression of sin:

Crooked places or perverseness – wrong ways of thinking caused by our sin nature causes us to become perverse.

We begin to oppose God in the way we think. The enemy forms strongholds in our lives and we become rebellious and stubborn.

When this wrong thinking is acted upon, it becomes iniquity in our lives.

When it is frequently reinforced (birds of a feather), it becomes a stronghold. In other words, it becomes easier to think that way.

When this wrong thinking is firmly in place and the individual refuses to repent (change the way they think), a door is opened or demonic possession.

“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3)

What can be done? How can we be straightened out?

The “GOOD NEWS” is this:

“I will bring the blind by a way they did not know, I will lead them in paths they have not known.  I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. These things I will do for them and not forsake them” (Isaiah 42:16)

God does this through Jesus Christ – His Word!

Isaiah 40:4-8

He confirms this in II Corinthians 10:4-5

Our part is to be willing to be changed by working with His Word towards that end.  Romans 12:1-2

Transformed – metamorphosis= to transform, to change.

God’s Word will change your mind, if you let it!

This is why He tells us to, “Study to show ourselves approved unto God, a workman that has no need to be ashamed, because we are rightly dividing (understanding and agreeing with) the word of truth.”  (II Timothy 2:15)

It will straighten out your thinking, if you let it!

It will make the crooked places straight, if you let it!

A sinner is someone who doesn’t know and has never yielded their heart and life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

A carnal Christian is someone who has never submitted their mind (way of thinking) and allowed the word of God to change them.

A Christian (disciple – a follower, student or learner of Christ) is someone who yields their hearts and minds to the Lord Jesus Christ (the Word of God), continually learning about Him by studying the Word, thereby growing in grace and knowledge of Him, being transformed by the renewing of their mind.

These Three are synonymous:

Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God

The Bible, the Word of the Living God

The Holy Ghost, the Spirit of the Living God

When we accept Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, into our hearts and lives, we become “born again”.

As we study the Bible, the Word of the Living God, our thinking begins to change and learn how to submit our minds and bodies to God’s will.

The more we are filled with His Word, the more the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of the Living God, can change us and use us to impact the world around us.

If we will confess our wrong thinking to God, our rebellion and stubbornness, and study His word, our thinking will change.

As our thinking changes, the strongholds of sin are being pulled down. As they fall, our behavior and actions will change.

As we begin to change, we’re now walking with God, in agreement with His Word and submitted to Him, the devil has to flee!

Not only have the strongholds been pulled down, but the demons (with their perverted way of thinking) have been driven out!

Now you “know the truth (which is Jesus Christ, the Word of God), and (by His Spirit) the truth has made you free!”

The crooked places have been made straight and you are no longer perverted!
